With an aim to modernise labour regulation, strengthen social security and improve ease of doing business, the Government of India has notified four New Labour Codes in India, effective 21 November 2025, replacing 29 central labour laws. These india labour codes will require organisations across all sectors to reassess their HR, payroll and compliance frameworks.
Key areas of impact include the revised definition of wages, employee and worker classification, gratuity eligibility, and new provisions on working hours, overtime and leave encashment. Organisations will also face new obligations with the new category of workers, such as gig and platform workers, included under social security coverage. Organisations must immediately analyse the impact of these rules and upgrade their policies, processes and compliance structures to align with the new labour codes in India.
