Indirect Tax Alert - Recommendations of 57^th GST Council Meeting

The 57^th GST Council meeting was held in New Delhi on 8 October 2026. The Council has recommended a significant package of reforms covering registration, returns, refunds, input tax credit (‘ITC’), dispute resolution, exports, enforcement and ease of doing business along with certain sector-specific rate changes and clarifications.

While the reforms announced pursuant to the 56^th GST Council meeting last year primarily focused on rate rationalisation, the recommendations of the 57^th GST Council meeting seeks to address procedural bottlenecks and areas of continuing litigation while increasing automation and reducing taxpayer interface with GST authorities.
